We are preparing to start potty training here in the next couple of weeks (when the diapers run out! Scary). Lexi was potty trained in 1 week. I know Ty is going to be sooo much harder! I have NO IDEA how to potty train a boy.
So if you have done it, please tell me, do you potty train them standing up or sitting down? What are the pros and cons of each? Is 2 too early to train? (Lexi was about to turn 2 when we trained her.)
People have been giving me mixed suggestion on how to do this, like, train them standing up so that you don't have to re-teach them before going to school/they do it like daddy. But then others say, it's to big of a mess to teach them standing up and to teach sitting down.
While I know I could probably read a book about how to do this, (and this post is turning into a novel itself,) I think that real life experience is what really matters.
So please please please, if you have PT a boy then leave me a comment on how and why you did it that way! Thanks everyone.
Oh and since NO ONE entered in the Heart-it-forward contest (Why? I just can't figure it out!) the winners were Erin and Holly and because I LOVE Melissa, you get to win too! Congrats and remember you have to heart-it-forward too (I'll be watching :))! Email me your addresses at katwatk@yahoo.com and I will send them to you right away! CONGRATS

Wish I had some good tips for you but I have only done the potty training thing once and it was for a girl (girls are so much easier when it comes to these things?!). I will wish you good luck though, I hope the potty training is speedy and the accidents are few!
lets see, we taught Carter sitting down. This was mostly for my benefit. We used the regular toilet, not a little one and so he wasn't tall enough and to have to get a stool, do pants, try to aim etc..it was too much for him. We just put him in underwear and went cold turkey from diapers--which i think is the best. Carter was about 4.5 when he decided he wanted to stand instead of sit. Then we took on the aiming dragon. HIT THE WATER--that phrase was repeated more than once in my house. :)
He took about 10 days to really be completely done. The poop was an issue for us. He was 3 and not two though. He just was not ready sooner. Boys(at least mine) would rather do ANYTHING over go take a break for pee.
GOOD LUCK!! Let us know how it goes. I need advice for a girl.
I am on my 3rd potty training experience with all boys. The first went sitting down on the little potty for a couple of weeks ntil we moved on to the toilet and then he just picked up he standing up thing. Aiming was a bit of a challenge at first, but I made him lean over and Hold the top of the seat(which is up) and that worked well. He was 2 1/2 when we started. The 2nd was by far my easiest. 3 weeks after his 2nd birthday he decided he wanted to be big like his brother and started going to the potty. He didn't like the sitting down so much so after 2-3 days we just went to the standing up. My last started last friday and is 28 months. He never sits unless it is for number 2... Overall, all my kids were completely trained (night and day in about 2 weeks. I go from diaper cold turkey to underwear. I do put diapers on them at night for the first few days... There's my tidbit.
Let's see... my child STILL isn't potty trained so I can offer you no advice! :) And I totally wanted to do the Heart it Forward - but didn't read your blog in time. :)
Um, I SUCK at toilet training and I'm glad people left helpful comments so I could see them too! Lexie was so stubborn and kept peeing her pants, so I decided to wait until she was ready. I don't know what to do with Mr Destructo because he freaks out when I try to make him just sit on the toilet, like he's traumatized. I'm tempted to train the 1 1/2 year old to see if it will motivate Hy, but then, I don't really know what I'm doing anyway.
Have you heard of Toilet Training in Less Than a Day? I'm too stupid for it, but I've heard of it working for smarter, more dedicated people.
My mom would put a cheerio in the toilet and have my brothers try to sink it. Corbin just potty trained himself after the twins were born, but I made him sit. I hate cleaning up pee.
AND...I am so glad I won!! Sort of! Anyway, I am way excited to do this on my blog too!
Melissa
